This weekend is a self-inflicted double header. My failed race a few weeks ago meant my running for the Kinetic Cup was in jeopardy. If you don’t know what the Kinetic Cup is, then shame. I shall explain: there is a race series hosted by Kinetic Multisports and if you compete in 5 races they score your performance. You’re given a weighted score based on distance, placement, complexity, and competitiveness of the field. It’s very technical math that I don’t understand nor care to understand. The important thing is that the top ranked male and female in each age group wins the Kinetic Cup! This means your name is engraved on a huge trophy they take from race to race. (I’ll try to get a picture of it this weekend)
This. Is. Everything.
I have been training really hard to earn my pro card and someday compete at the elite level. But on the sly, I have been training really hard to get my name on that cup.
What started out as a joke between me and my coach has turned into a borderline obsession checking the rankings and figuring out which races are most optimal for me to win. Aside from age group cup status, the overall top female and male get a free cycling jersey and bib shorts. I will do anything for free stuff. Ask Hubs; he once talked me out of joining Sam’s Club during a promo event. Every new member got a free cookie! Never mind I didn’t live near a Sam’s Club at the time.
My first text after my bike failure last race was to Coach, not saying what happened, not giving him a debrief on the swim, but rather notifying him to find another KC race pronto as my Cup run was in jeopardy. Dude was on it. So much so that we decided to build in some buffer. My top five best scores are averaged; we only planned on five races. But now we’re going for seven. Hence the double header. I’ll run an olympic distance Saturday and a sprint distance Sunday. September 29 is my next 70.3 IronMan race. The weekend after that I have one more KC olympic to round out the season. 4 races in 5 weeks.
The next 70.3 is a big deal. This race has all the qualifications I need to achieve my professional status. I am very motivated about that, but I can’t lie, at this point in the KC series, I only have eyes for the Cup.
So if you want to track me this weekend, here is the link. Race start is 7 AM.
